Foreign Internship Bio-Informatics at UCC, Cork
Hi, I'm Matthias Claes,
I'm a student advenced bachelor Bio-informartics at the University College West - Flanders (Howest), Bruges. For the last part of my eduction I will follow an internship at the University College Cork, Ireland.
The project that I will do during my internship is to make an upgrade of an ribo - seq genome browser called GWIPS - viz (Genome-Wide Information on Protein Synthesis). About this more information in my weekly diary and contact.

1st Week
Starting a new chapter of my education
For the first time in my live I will do an internship in a foreign country.
Flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Cork, Ireland
Flying from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Cork, Ireland.
The first week was getting to know a bit more about the backside of GWIPS-viz.
- Looking the difference between UCSC genome browser and GWIPS-viz browser.
- How to mirror the UCSC genome browser.
- Getting to know about map - structure to build the site.
It's not only working, but enjoying the nature as well.
The nature in Ireland is mqgnificent. But you must be luky that the weather is beautiful.

2nd week
Getting a bit more formiliar with the backside
After week you get more formiliar with the backside of GWIPS-viz browser.
Trying to change the outlook of the website:
- Changing the mirrored site from a more UCSC genome browser outlook to a more GWIPS-viz look a like website.
- Using your webtechnology skills to make the site look great.

It's a beautiful thing to do on a rainy day. It's not far from the university.

3th week
Trying to modify the sites to a more GWIPS-viz look:
- Same as 2nd week
- Still learn some new skills to make the outlook of the site great.
Evening in Cork
Going out on a saturday night and enjoying the local music.
Downside if you're not 21 you don't get in any pub.
4th week
Outlook
- Doing some cosmetic changes to the site.
- Make the topbar more like thoe current topbar.
- Trying to make connection between dropdowns and databases.

Getting some local qnd fresh products.

- Try to make the hgGateway page to more GWIPS-viz.
- This in different ways.
- Trial and Error.

Data and phylogenetic tree
- Make changes to the MySQL - database.
- Let the phylogenetic tree displaying.

The same old story

- Trying everything on a new test server.
- Checking for some bugs.
- Trying to get the site online
